Dear Premier Stelmach:

I was very discouraged to learn that the best available grizzly bear census data (from 2008) shows that less than 500 grizzly bears remain in Alberta – well below the internationally recognized level at which a grizzly bear population is considered endangered (1000 breeding age adults).

As an Albertan I have immense pride in knowing that grizzly bears still roam freely in our Foothills. However, I also recognize that because they are an umbrella species, the plight of our grizzlies reflects a much larger problem when it comes to the health of Alberta’s environment, in particular its wild lands and wild life.  
I urge you to take immediate action for grizzly bear recovery – ideally through those actions that have led to progress in grizzly bear recovery in the US portion of the Rocky Mountain and Foothills regions.  These include:
1.  Protecting habitat 
2.  Listing the grizzly bear as endangered
3.  Reinstating Alberta’s Grizzly Bear Recovery Team
4.  Fully implementing the Recovery Team’s recommendations
5.  Allocating dedicated funding for recovery

It is clear from past work that first and foremost grizzly bears need habitat protection: more (and better managed) protected areas will contribute to this need and, combined with better access management, could lead to the recovery of grizzly bears in the province.

I agree with your statement that "nothing is more important than protecting the land we've inherited" and look forward to seeing you take a leadership role in protecting Alberta’s wilderness and the species it harbours, such as our majestic grizzly.
