CPAWS is Canada’s only nationwide charity dedicated solely to the protection of Canada’s public land and water and ensuring our parks are managed to protect the nature within them. In 2022, CPAWS Northern Alberta chapter moved the needle on nature conservation here in Alberta! As an environmental organization, we work towards increased nature protection through community engagement, connecting people with nature, and advocating for policy that protects our landscapes and ensures habitat for wildlife in Alberta.  
 
Here are a few examples of work and collaborations we are particularly proud of from 2022:

• In May 2022, we were part of a collaborative that released a community policy that showed the Government of Alberta that a NEW Coal Policy could prioritize the protection of our landscapes and our waters.  
• That same month, we released 50 Years of Sprawling Tailings: Mapping decades of destruction by oil sands tailings. A report revealing that the total tailings footprint has grown nearly 300% in the last 20 years and weaving Indigenous perspectives on community impacts.  
• In August 2022, we saw overwhelming support for our Wood Buffalo National Park campaign. Folks from across all corners of the country came together and wrote to the Federal and Provincial governments urging for strong action for Wood Buffalo. In a mere 10 days, over 3000 letters were sent!  
• Throughout 2022, the status of caribou in Alberta (and across Canada) remains precarious. Our conservation work focuses on caribou and their habitat on Alberta’s Public Lands and within our national parks. We have been advocating for caribou recovery actions in Government of Alberta-led planning initiatives and engaging with Parks Canada to push for Jasper National Park’s Caribou recovery. Without drastic conservation measures and increased habitat protections, caribou could vanish from our landscapes.
• We continue to support the Dene Tha’ First Nation in advancing Indigenous Led Conservation around Bistcho Lake. We were honoured to have been invited to an incredible trip to Bistcho Lake (read the blog here!), we continued to support the Nation’s community led wildlife monitoring program, executing the third year of the remote wildlife camera program.
