Our natural spaces are faced with a twin crisis: the climate and biodiversity-loss crises. The CPAWS Northern Alberta chapter focuses on increasing protections for Alberta’s public lands and waters so that we can leave a legacy for generations to come.
Our Mission
We seek to achieve conservation of public lands and protection of parks and wilderness in Alberta through science, collaboration, and community engagement.
Our Vision
How we approach our work: the how
There is no singular way to increase protected lands and water: it takes a variety of perspectives and tools. CPAWS Northern Alberta focuses on supporting Indigenous-led conservation initiatives, species-at-risk recovery, effective land-use planning, policy that prioritizes healthy ecosystems and nature-based climate solutions. We see advocacy and public engagement as essential for impactful change within conservation in Alberta.
CPAWS is nationwide
CPAWS Northern Alberta is a local chapter that is part of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) which is a registered charity. It is Canada’s only charity dedicated to the protection of public land, freshwater and ocean with a regional chapter in each province and territory.
The CPAWS Northern Alberta Chapter was one of the society’s first designated regional chapters, formed in 1968. CPAWS Northern Alberta's focus is on the northern two-thirds of the province: from the Red Deer area to the Northwest Territories border.
