West Fraser no longer planning to log in A La Peche this season, reassess in 2023
February 7, 2022
West Fraser has made the decision to postpone plans to log in areas within the A La Peche caribou range (compartments Berland 3 and 16). Originally planning to log in the Fall of 2021, the company has notified CPAWS Northern Alberta and interested parties that they have chosen alternative locations to harvest this season and will reconsider harvest plans in 2023 when a sub-regional plan is set to be finalized. The sub-regional plan should include direction for harvesting in the caribou range in a way that aligns with recovery objectives under Canada’s Species At Risk Act.
Read the full update from West Fraser below. This letter was provided to CPAWS Northern Alberta following discussions on our concerns about the potential impact of the proposed logging on caribou. We commend West Fraser and the government of Alberta for re-considering the appropriateness of these logging plans in the A La Peche range.

The Biggest Coal Risk to Date: New Coal Policy Direction in Opposition to Albertans' Values
Government of Alberta MUST develop a coal policy that protects Albertans and our Future
Over the past five years, Albertans have been loud and clear that they oppose ANY new coal exploration or mining in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains and Eastern Slopes. Tens of thousands came together for a collective, concerted push against the Government of Alberta's recission of the 1976 Coal Policy and the subsequent mine exploration, which was successful in forcing the province to implement a moratorium in 2022.
