Speak up for the imperilled Wabasca wood bison herd

Alberta’s smallest natural wood bison herd has declined by an estimated 75% over the past 10 years. Recent surveys found that the Wabasca wood bison herd in Northern Alberta may have as few as 9 animals remaining. Members of the ShagowAskee Foundation recall a time when bison were seen every day. Now, bison from this culturally significant herd are difficult to even find.

So why do Alberta’s draft sub-regional plans permit MORE logging and development in this herd’s critical habitat?

Despite the Wabasca herd’s continued decline, the Red Earth Sub-regional Plan proposes a forest harvest timing series that would clear a large portion of land in the centre of the Wabasca range with no acknowledgement of impacts on the survival of the herd. Help make a difference today and let your elected representative know that now is the time to act for Wabasca wood bison before it’s too late.

Send a letter

Not sure what to say? We have crafted a template you can copy or use for inspiration! Make sure to send your letter before February 1st, 2027.

Provide feedback on the draft land use plan

Aside from sending a letter, you can provide feedback on the Draft Red Earth Sub-regional Plan though a public engagement survey until February 1st, 2027. We have put together an ENGO Engagement Guide to help you navigate the draft plan and identify areas where you can provide input to support caribou and wood bison.
